Fifty-Five Years

Today, it has been 55 years since Betty and I said “I Do and I Will” amid family and friends at the center of the VCU Campus in Grove Avenue Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia.

Perfect marriage? No, far from it. But in a nutshell, a good description of our marriage would include lots of joy, lots of fun, lots of immaturity, lots of success, lots of failures, lots of tears, lots of forgiveness, lots of pain, lots of sleepless nights, lots of good decisions, lots of poor choices, lots of valleys, lots of mountain tops, lots of repentance, lots of shame, lots of grace, but above it all we decided that the foundation of our marriage would rest upon Jesus Christ, our Savior, and Lord. And He showed up in His grace in every situation of life. So, His grace has been evident and sufficient in every circumstance. He has taken both of us on a journey of destiny and changed us in ways beyond our faintest imagination.

During these years came three wonderful kids, spouses, and eight precious grandchildren whom we love with all our hearts, a terrific addition to the Powell family.

After 55 years, I can say that God has been good, and life has been worth living with the one he gave me on that day.

Happy Anniversary, Betty Powell. I love you.
